According to legend, in the 1890’s an advertising agent for Prudential was inspired by the rocks of Laurel Hill when he passed them one day. This inspiration led to the use of the Rock of Gibraltar being used as Prudential’s logo.
- From 1880-1962 Laurel Hill was home to an almshouse, a penitentiary, an insane asylum, and infectious disease hospitals. During the construction of the New Jersey Turnpike, there was a lot of controversy over the dead from these institutions, who were buried in the surrounding area, particularly resulting from the vast number of unmarked graves. Starting in January 2003, a team of over 100 experts took almost nine months to exhume the 4,571 sets of human remains in what is widely held to be the largest disinterment project in the history of the United States. Of the bodies, 2 were positively identified and returned to family members, while the rest were reburied at Maple Grove Park Cemetery in Hackensack.
- In the 1950-60’s, Secaucus had the reputation for being one of, if not the most, odorous towns in the New York Metropolitan area, due to its many pig farms, slaughterhouses, rendering plants, and junk yards. However, Secaucus has redeemed its reputation, being voted the number 11 best place to live in New Jersey in 2008.
- In 1982 a new mineral was announced. Called Petersite after Thomas A. Peters and Joseph Peters, the light green glassy crystal was discovered in Snake Hill (officially Laurel Hill) in Secaucus.
LATEST SUGGESTIONS FOR EXIT 17
The phragmites abundant in the Meadowlands might not be useful in brewing but could inspire a wheat beer. Maybe a murky hefeweizen?

Exit 17 is the heart of the Meadowlands, which we are hoping can be kept "Forever Wild" in the face of overdevelopment. Thus, I propose an EXIT 17 MEADOWLANDS FOREVER WILD ALE (as in, the type of ale that uses Brettanomyces bacteria). And perhaps, maybe Flying Fish can donate a portion of the proceeds towards Meadowlands preservation efforts.

A strong, bold beer should be brewed for Secaucus. As a Secaucus native, we are proud of our town, whether it be telling people (in our NY accent) how to correctly pronounce the town's name "SEE - CAW (like saw or paw) - CUSS", discussing if we're from the Northend, Southend or Backroad, telling people Bruce filmed a music video here, a Krajewski ran for Mayor back in the day and the land our house sits on was a pig farm many years ago.
A strong, bold beer...just like us Secaucus natives!
